Come discover the history of the borough that actively participated in Montreal’s urbanization! We suggest that you visit a few historical monuments during your next bike rental in Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie.
Once composed of several small agricultural villages, this future borough saw the arrival of a massive influx of workers in the 1780s. They were attracted by the limestone mining operations taking place in the rural areas, and such activities soon put a halt to farming. The Conquest of Western Canada and the advent of the railroad led to the development of several businesses that contributed to the construction of trains, such as the Angus Shops. Some of these companies are still in existence today, most notably L. Villeneuve, the oldest lumber yard in Montreal. It was established in 1872 by Léonidas Villeneuve. The limestone deposits were buried between the 1940s and 50s, leaving behind parks, like Père-Marquette Park, which used to be home to the largest of them.
