Once composed of several small agricultural villages, this future borough saw the arrival of a massive influx of workers in the 1780s. They were attracted by the limestone mining operations taking place in the rural areas, and such activities soon put a halt to farming. The Conquest of Western Canada and the advent of the railroad led to the development of several businesses that contributed to the construction of trains, such as the Angus Shops. Some of these companies are still in existence today, most notably L. Villeneuve, the oldest lumber yard in Montreal. It was established in 1872 by Léonidas Villeneuve. The limestone deposits were buried between the 1940s and 50s, leaving behind parks, like Père-Marquette Park, which used to be home to the largest of them.

Did you know that Rosemont-La Petite-Patrie has several small urban gardens? Wishing to become more ecological, the borough adopted an urban agricultural policy in April 2021. It established the basis for distributing trees and shrubs with edible fruits to citizens, relaxed the bylaws for owning laying hens, and indicated a general intent to develop more free community gardens in various parks.
If we were asked about the most unusual thing we’ve ever seen at BIXI, it would be the sheep in Maisonneuve Park! The Biquette project is an eco-grazing experiment in the middle of the city. You can take part in several activities with the sheep, including animal-assisted therapy and yoga. You may also come across the chickens in the park and learn more about biodiversity.
