Frequently asked questions

If you need help, don't hesitate to contact us.

1 - Is the system in service all year long?

The system is in service from April 15 to November 15. The stations are removed for the winter.

2 - Who can use BIXI?

You have to be at least 14 years of age and 1.24 metre (4'1") in height to use BIXI. BIXI users who are minors must be subscribed by their legal guardians and remain under their responsibility.

3 - How long can I take a bike out?

BIXI was created for short trips from one station to another. Additional usage fees encourage users to dock as often as possible. You must first subscribe or purchase a short-term pass to access the system. You may make as many trips as you'd like while your pass is active. With a short-term access pass, trips from 0-30 minutes are included; trips longer than 30 minutes incur usage fees. With the annual and monthly memberships, trips from 0-45 minutes are included; trips longer than 45 minutes incur usage fees. You can take a bike out for a maximum of 24 hours (additional usage fees will apply). After that time, the bike will be considered stolen and a fee of $1,000 may be charged to your credit card.

4 - Can I lend my BIXI key to someone?

No. Your BIXI key is yours and yours alone. Member subscriptions are non-transferable.

5 - If I purchase a 1-day access, a 3-day access, or a 10 One-Way package, is my ride code valid for all of my trips?

No, the ride code expires after 5 minutes for security purposes. For each new trip, you must return to the station kiosk, select “Rent a bike” and swipe your credit card to identify yourself. As long as your pass is active, the system will recognize you and the access fee will not be charged again. The station kiosk will generate a new ride code that you may print or view on the touch screen.

6 - What is the $100 security deposit?

When you join BIXI with a one-way trip, a 1-day access, a 3-day access, or a 10 One-Way package, there is a pre-authorization hold of $100 per bike. This is not a charge against your credit card, it acts as a security deposit and gets returned to you. Holds can take up to 10 days to get released, depending on your credit card company. The hold release might take up to 30 days with an international credit card.

7 - How do I take a bike out of a dock?

Enter the five-digit code you obtained at the pay station (choose the Rent a bike option and follow the instructions) or insert your BIXI key into the reader at the bike dock. A yellow light will turn on indicating that the code or the BIXI key is being validated. A green light will come on once the validation has been completed and the bike dock will unlock. You then have 15 seconds to remove the bike by grasping the handlebars and pulling the bike firmly towards you, after which time the bike dock will lock again. If the code or the BIXI key is invalid, or if the bike is damaged, a red light will come on and the bike will remain locked in the dock. If you experience repeated difficulties, try again at another bike dock or call customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7) to notify us of any defects.

8 - How do I return a bike to a dock?

Push the front wheel of the bike firmly into the slot of the bike dock until you hear a mechanical "click". If the operation is successful, a green light will come on and the bike dock will lock. It is very important to ensure that the green light comes on before leaving your bike. If the bike isn't properly locked in, a red light will come on and you will have to repeat the process. If the red light on the bike dock stays on and your bike is not accepted, you must remove the bike and try another empty dock. If you experience repeated difficulties, contact our customer service by calling 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7). The bike remains under your responsibility until it is properly locked in at a dock. A bike that is improperly locked in could result in additional charges.

9 - What is the maximum weight a BIXI bike can carry?

120 kilograms (265 lb) for the bike and 8 kilograms (18 lb) for the carrying rack.

10 - Am I required to wear a helmet?

The law does not require people to wear a helmet when riding a regular bike. However, it is the only effective means of protection against head injuries. The Société d'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and BIXI therefore encourage you to wear a helmet when biking. For more information, consult the Bicycle Safety section.

You must wear a helmet at all times when riding an electric bike. It is mandatory by law. For more information, consult the Highway Safety Code

11 - I subscribed online. Can I use the service right away?

Yes. You have access to your membership right away with the BIXI app and with the credit card associated with your account. With the BIXI app, sign in to your BIXI account, choose the closest station to you, select “unlock a bike”, and the app will generate a 5-digit ride code. Swipe your credit card at a station kiosk, the kiosk will recognize you as a member, and offer you a 5-digit ride code. Once you have received your BIXI key, you will need to activate it on the BIXI website or by contacting customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7).

12 - I received my BIXI key. How do I activate it?

You can activate your BIXI key by logging in to your BIXI space on the website or by contacting our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7).

13 - I lost my BIXI key. What should I do?

Contact our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7) to have the BIXI key deactivated as quickly as possible. A new BIXI key may be mailed to you for $5. You may also get a new BIXI key for free at one of the 16 service points of the STM. If you get a key from the STM, contact our customer service line at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7) to activate the key. In the meantime, you always have access to your membership with the BIXI app and with the credit card associated with your account.

14 - My BIXI key is broken. What should I do?

Contact our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7) or by email info@bixi.com to have a new BIXI key mailed to you. You may also get a new BIXI key for free at one of the 16 service points of the STM. If you get a key from the STM, contact our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7) to activate the key. In the meantime, you always have access to your membership with the BIXI app and with the credit card associated with your account.

15 - Can I take out more than one bike with my BIXI key or my credit card?

With the BIXI key, it is not possible to take out more than one bike, since it is used to identify a single and unique user. With the 1- or 3-day access, the user may rent a maximum of four bikes with the same credit card at a station kiosk. In this case, the basic fees apply for each rented bike. Please note that a security deposit of $100 per bike is temporarily placed on your credit card and is kept up to ten (10) days.

16 - I tried returning my bike, the light went red or there was no light and I can’t take my bike out. What do I do?

Contact our customer service line immediately at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or at 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7). The red light indicates that the bike was not returned properly. The green light is the only signal you can rely on when you return a bike. The bike remains under your responsibility until it is properly locked in a dock or, if this proves impossible, until the bike is handed over to a BIXI representative.

17 - What do I do if there are no empty bike docks when I want to return my bike?

You can request a 15-minute time credit at a station kiosk, free of charge. This should give you enough time to return your bike to a nearby station. You will need your credit card (short-term access) or the 7-digit number on the back of your BIXI key (members) to identify yourself at the station kiosk. Please note that the Time Credit option is only available when the station is full and you are not able to return your bike. Refer to the station kiosk to have a list of the three closest stations and the number of docks available in real time. Refer to the BIXI app to see where all the stations are and to see how many docks are available in real time. Otherwise, you can contact our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7) for immediate assistance.

18 - What do I do if there are no bikes available at my station?

Check the system map available on the BIXI app to see where all the stations are and to see bike availability in real time. Refer to the station kiosk to have a list of the three closest stations and the number of bikes available in real time.

19 - My BIXI bike has been lost or stolen. What happens now?

You must notify us of the loss or theft of a bike as quickly as possible. Contact our customer service at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or at 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7). A penalty of $1,000 may apply.

20 - I've had an accident involving my BIXI bike. What do I do?

In the case of an incident or accident involving your BIXI bike, you must notify us by contacting our customer service line at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or at 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7) as quickly as possible. The bike remains under your responsibility until it is properly returned to a dock or handed over to a BIXI representative. Otherwise, you must secure the bike.

21 - My bike is defective. What do I do?

Simply lock your bike back into the dock and report the issue by pressing the red button on the docking point so that a technician can take care of the problem. You have 30 seconds to press the button after docking the bike. If you have any problems, please contact our customer service line at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7).

22 - My transaction was denied. What should I do?

We invite you to verify with your financial institution. Please note that there is a $100 security deposit per bike when you join BIXI with a short-term access pass. Contact our customer service line at 514-789-BIXI (2494) or at 1-877-820-2453 (open 24/7) for further details.

If you are using your OPUS card, you must create an account before you can purchase one-way trips with your OPUS card. To create your account, go to Become a member to access the subscription form. A credit card (VISA, Master Card or American Express) is required to open an account. Make sure to have your credit card in hand when creating your account.

23 - Can I use my OPUS card to purchase an access pass other than one-way trips?

No, only one-way trips can be purchased with an OPUS card.

24 - Do all of the OPUS cards issued by other public transit corporations in Quebec work?

Yes, if you hold a valid OPUS card and are registered on the BIXI website.

25 - Must I have an active transit fare on my OPUS card before I can use it to purchase a BIXI access pass?

No, all you need is a valid OPUS card. No fares need to be encoded in order to use BIXI.

26 - May I use my OPUS card instead of my BIXI key?

No, the OPUS card is not a substitute for the BIXI key. The BIXI key remains the easiest way for all members to rent a bike. The OPUS access is limited to one-way trips.
