How to use BIXI
Find a bike or docking point
The easiest way to find an available BIXI bike or dock is with the BIXI app!
Stations in red contain bikes, while stations in gray contain only free docks. To search for a dock, you can change the setting.
Stations near you show the number of bikes available. The symbol of a bike with a lightning bolt indicates the presence of electric BIXIs. Depending on the type of bike you want to take for your trip, you can choose to see only regular BIXIs, only electric BIXIs or only BIXI trailers on the station map.
By clicking on the station, you can get all the information about availability, add the station to your favorites, and get directions. You can also see the approximate distance that each of the electric BIXIs at the station could take you, based on the battery charge level.
And off you go!
Purchase access via the app
Interested in trying BIXI for the first time? We’ll show you the ropes!
Step one: download the app. This is the easiest and fastest way to rent a BIXI.
Click on Choose a pass. One-way pass or membership, the process is exactly the same. Check the product details to make sure they’re right for you, then complete your purchase.
Since this is your first time, you’ll need to create an account by following the instructions on the screen.
You will then be taken to the station map. Click on Unlock, then scan the QR code of the bike of your choice.
There you go! Have a great first BIXI ride!
Unlock a bike
With a membership, unlocking a BIXI is super easy.
Just open the app, click on Unlock and scan the QR code of the bike of your choice. And there you go!
If it doesn’t work as expected, don’t panic!
Here are some tips that should help:
- If it is late at night, use the flashlight function to illuminate the QR code to make it more readable.
- If the QR code is damaged, find the number of the bike you want to borrow and type it in (The number is always near the rear wheel, on the left side.)
And off you go!
Adjust a BIXI for your trip
When you borrow a BIXI, it becomes your bike for the duration of your trip. It needs to be properly adjusted for you!
Before leaving the station:
- Make sure the tires are sufficiently inflated
- Adjust the seat for maximum comfort
- Choose the right speed for your route
- Test the brakes
That’s it, the BIXI is ready for your ride!
Lock your bike properly
To properly lock your BIXI at the end of your trip, make sure that the triangle on the bike is properly aligned with the triangle inside the dock.
There’s no need to push hard! If it’s not properly aligned, the bike will never lock into place.
When the bike is properly locked, the green light comes on and you hear a melody. To be absolutely sure, activate the app notifications to receive one confirming that the bike has been returned. Another sign that your bike is properly locked is when the timer disappears from the app.
Attention! If the timer does not disappear, it means that the BIXI is not properly locked and therefore still your responsibility.
The ultimate trick to make sure it locks?
- Gently push your BIXI to make sure it is fully inserted into the dock.
- Lift the seat slightly and let the BIXI fall back down, bouncing on its rear wheel, to ensure that the alignment in the dock is perfect.
That’s it! Green light on, notification received, timer gone: the BIXI is locked!
Return a bike to a station with 2 rows
Some BIXI stations have 2 rows. It allows us to make the maximum number of bikes and docks available in popular areas, even when space is limited!
To return a bike, it is important to do so in the first row whenever a space is available. Returning bikes to the second row blocks the docks in the first row and prevents other users, who have seen available docks at this station in the app, from returning their bikes.
Now your BIXI has been properly returned!
Report a bike as damaged
Have you noticed a problem with your BIXI and think it should be repaired before being used by someone else? End your trip at a station and report the bike to our team on the road!
Option 1 – Press the red button on the dock where you returned it.
Option 2 – Visit your profile and report the bike in the app.
Reporting a problem locks the bike and prevents other BIXISTS from using it.
To quickly indicate to other users that the bike is damaged, turn the seat backwards.
If you notice a minor issue, such as a broken basket cord or sticky handles, please do not report the bike. These issues do not require immediate attention and will be addressed during regular bike maintenance.
Thank you for helping us keep the bikes in good condition!

With the Group Ride feature, BIXI members can invite friends to ride with them.
Simply select the number of bikes you want to add and proceed to checkout.
Rides for friends work like one-way passes. There is an unlocking fee, then a per-minute usage fee that varies depending on the bike chosen.
The amount will be charged to the credit card on your account at the end of the day. After all, you’re the one who invites!
Have a nice ride with your friends!
